Here's a shot of Jack Steele teaching a creative writing class. Nah, it is John Frisius of Van Nuys High School. Anybody who knew him never forgot him. Okay, class. Now pay attention. Gasp, due to Smashwords distribution to just about any quality e-book retailer, we are seeing some interesting sales figures. Interesting in that we did not expect to see any, and now we are seeing some. Jack Steele, author of Firefight and of course Retribution, has done quite well. Then of course the venerable M.M. Wilshire has done all right with The Most Dangerous Time, Jackie's Week, A Small Matter, and All That Was Happy. Here is a GRIPE. For some reason, people either love or hate All That Was Happy. That book has a spiritual component, and it really draws out some dark readership. The type of people who come unglued if the G word is mentioned. Oh yes, some people cannot stand the thought of God. Perhaps because they think they are Him. Or the downward titration on their psychotropic medications has caused some moderate disintegration right as they were reading one of our stories. There is also somebody who decries a sentence of a full page or more. Saying it was not done, not allowed. Why not? William Faulkner wrote rambling, stream of consciousness sentences. It was okay then, so why not now? Are we no longer smart enough to read a sentence longer than 5 words? Give me a break.
Should these really be called e-books? It used to be a snub, as though it was not a real book. A "real" book requiring paper and a high price. After all e stands for electronic, and everything is electronic. Even if reading a "paper" book, the images are electronically interpreted by the brain, reading the retinal digitalization, or pixelation or what have you.
Why not instead simply call them C-books, C being for convenient. You can download it to your phone or your computer at work, or your mini laptop or wherever you want. That is convenient. If you must have paper, you can print one out yourself at half the cost on your own computer.
The paper publishers used to say their quality was higher. Not. I just read a NYT Bestseller, with a typo and impossible grammer on nearly every page. So the quality issue is moot. Also, the book was 3 inches thick and only contained 1 book. My Kindle is half inch and holds thousands. Not to mention reading it in bed does not require the strength of a body builder in the weight pit at Venice Beach.
I say it again, the books put out by Venice Beach Writers Club are simply great books. It has nothing to do with format or price. These authors, Jack Steele, M.M. Wilshire, and Nia Ryan, are simply great storytellers and great writers. That is a rare combination.
The main thing about the works produced by the beach bums at The Venice Beach Writers Club, is that you get a solid read for your money. You get a ride you will not forget. And all that for generally less than you pay for a soda at a fast food restaurant.
The works of M.M. Wilshire are available at Barnes and Noble, Sony, Kobos, Apple Store and soon Amazon, as well as, of course, Smashwords.
